The month of August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, so what better subject to write about than Psoriasis.
To begin with, let's find out more about it.
∆ Psoriasis affects nearly 3% of the world population.
∆ It is NOT contagious.
∆ It is an autoimmune, chronic disease which causes red, scaly and itchy skin. Skin regeneration normally happens between 27-30 days but for people with Psoriasis this happens between 3-5 days.
∆ It affects any race, gender and age.
∆ It varies in severity and type.
∆ Not only does it affect the skin but it can also cause other health complication such as Psoriatic Arthritis, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Depression, and more.
∆ There are a variety of treatments but the effectiveness and results will vary from one individual to another.
∆ Treatment can be painful, cause side affects, and also be very expensive.
∆ Psoriatic Arthritis affects 30-50% of people diagnosed with Psoriasis.
∆ There is NO cure for Psoriasis or Psoriatic Arthritis.
∆ Psoriasis can affect patients mentally as they can feel angry, sad, ugly and extremely self-conscious.
∆ Psoriasis can lead people being avoided and bullied, so helping to raise awareness and educate people is important!
There are many sites online to help raise awareness about Psoriasis and provide you with as information as possible, but here are a few I believe you should have a look at.
My go to page for Psoriasis Awareness Month would be the National Psoriasis Foundation as they are doing a week-by-week awareness campaign throughout August. Here's the link for you to get involved - Psoriasis Awareness Month
It doesn't take much to simply inform someone about something. So, if you see someone with Psoriasis, know of someone who has it, or just simply want to help educate people about the disease, then check out the sites and help spread the word this month.
